Delve into the art of sculpting for the Raku Firing! This 3 week long workshop will spend the first 2 weeks sculpting a creation or creature and the final week participating in the exciting raku glaze firing. The best part? You will be able to take your creation home the same night it’s fired!

This class is recommended for students with a basic knowledge of clay. One creation per student to ensure firing. All materials are included in the cost of the class.

Raku Firing is the process in which a glazed or unglazed piece is rapidly fired, then pulled from the kiln glowing hot and placed in a reduction trash can filled with sawdust or paper and smothered to create the stunning multi colored effects in the glaze and smoke blackened raw clay. This type of firing is NOT FOOD SAFE. Once the piece is reduced in the trash can for a short time it is cooled in water, cleaned and ready to take home. Due to the nature of this firing process the final class may take longer than the times listed.

For the firing, Participants must wear cotton clothing, have hair secured and covered and closed toed shoes for this class as they will be in close quarters with fire. There will also be a great deal of smoke involved; those sensitive to smoke are recommended to wear a mask during the last part of the class.

All JBCP classes have a minimum enrollment that must be met for the class to hold.
